Weekly Photo Challenge: Horizon

Halloween on the Horizon

Halloween on the Horizon

Mum is just getting into this WordPress world and somehow stumbled across a post for a weekly challenge.  This week the word is “Horizon”  The blogger defines the word as:  ” The space or line where the sky meets the earth.”  This is a good and dandy definition for the word but when she hears the word horizon she thinks of it as a timeline, such as an event is foreseen to happen on the horizon.  Her image for this weekly challenge is taken with that second definition in mind.  Halloween is on the horizon, tomorrow to be sure!  For us Floridians, this also means Fall is on the horizon.  Heck, we’ve already had a few days where we’ve been able to leave the windows open to allow the crisp cooler air to entire the home.  One day mum even left me outside all day while she went to work.  I think she felt bad though, because she came home and gave me a big huge huge.  Mum, I was fine.  It was only a high of 70 all day.  I laid out, listened to the birds, chased a few squirrels, barked, and slept.  You should forget to bring me in before you go to work more often!

Fall also means the holiday’s are on the horizon!  As soon as you turn around Thanksgiving will be here!  I’ve heard a lot about this holiday already, since my birthday seems to fall on Thanksgiving, its kind of a big deal!  *wink*  Mum is already making room for our big trip to Panama City with the family.  After Thanksgiving, it seems as if the biggest Holiday of all comes around!  Christmas.  I’m already excited about this holiday because I’m under the impression that it is pretty cool, presents, along with a little bit of worship!  Sounds fun!  Lot’s of good things on the horizon to look forward too!

What does the word Horizon mean to you?  Why not blog your own weekly challenge or just leave a photo on my Facebook page with the Horizon comment!

BitStrips?

BitStrip?   A funny little app in which you can cartoon yourself and insert into funny settings with friends.  Only problem is they are becoming a bit overwhelming, 9 out of 10 of my facebook feed posts seem to be of newly created cartoons.

Are BitStrips filling your feed and pushing all my adorable cuteness out?  Well here is a simple way to block them!  I have not tried on a mobile device, these instructions are for a computer.

Pre-Halloween Post

Yes, its that time a year!  Fall/Halloween!!  It is my first Halloween ever but I’m really digging this Holiday so far!  The family has decorated the yard, and even I was allowed out in the front yard to help a bit.  *gasp*  We have these two pumpkins which have been referred to as “perfect carving pumpkins” and these ghostly things hanging from the trees up front.

Inside the home is decorated as well.  We have a talking bowl, it is a head.  Very odd.  Another skull spits out M&M’s when you pull a little smaller bone on the side.

The kids have gotten various outfits, mum said I’m going to get one too she just can’t make up her mind.

Do you celebrate Halloween?  If so, how?

Duncan Hines Apple Crisp

My mum stumbled across this recipe a while back when she was having a “fall” desert craving.  Searching the allrecipes.com ingredients on hand, it pulled up this apple crisp recipe.  It is super easy to make, or at least I assume so because she makes it often and again, remember she’s NOT a baker!  lol

The recipe is as follows

  • 1 can (21 oz.) Duncan Hines Comstock® More Fruit Apple
  • 2 tsp. lemon juice
  • ¾ cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • ¾ cup flour
  • ¾ cup oats (old fashioned or quick cooking)
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 6 tbsp. butter or margarine, softened
  • Preheat oven to 350ºF. In 8″ square baking dish, place apple pie filling. Top with lemon juice.
  • In medium bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, oats, and cinnamon. Add butter; mix until crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over apple mixture.
  • Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until topping is browned and apple mixture is bubbly. Serve warm with ice cream or heavy cream as desired.

You see it is really super easy.  I see the brothers and sisters eating it for desert, breakfast, or a snack.  Sometimes she serves it with ice cream but usually it is like a last resort desert since the ingredients are usually at hand, so ice cream is not always available.

Are there any foods which you crave in fall?  What are they and have you made them yet this year? Fall is here, but I live in Florida where Fall is not really a season, more like a relief from 100+ degree temps

Sick Day. oh Joy! Tips for Treating a Child with a Cold or Flu

Today started really early when I was awaken from my cozy bed around 5am by the sounds of my Sissy crying.  Then she got sick.  Everywhere.  Then the oldest brother woke up, and also got sick.  It was a super fun morning for me, I don’t think my mom has even fed me yet, as she’s been busy washing, catching, and trying to prevent puke all morning.

Mom decided to keep both kids at home today.

When do you keep your children at home?  She found some helpful hints online and would like to share a list with you.

Fever of over 100 degrees
Vomiting
Symptoms which prevent normal actives such as:
excessive cough, headache, sore throat,

It looks like we will be staying home tomorrow as well as the guidelines for sending children back to school are 24 hours fever free WITHOUT the use of medications.

The first question that usually runs through any parents mind is, “Is this the flu or just a cold?”  There are a few ways to tell.  As always, please consult your doctor with any medical advice and/or questions, remember I’m just a dog……

According to WebMd, a cold usually starts with a mild sore throat that is bothersome for a few days, along with feeling tired or run down, but then goes away on its own.    A fever is not common with a cold, but a low grade temp is possible, especially in younger children.
The flu, however, comes on strong, with more severe symptoms then a cold, a high fever, intense headache, body aches, and chills.  With some flu strains vomiting and diarrhea can also occur, especially with the swine flu.   This can lead to dehydration, which is serious and may need to be seen by a doctor for IV fluids.   You may start to feel better after 2-5 days, but full recovery can take weeks.  Another side illness of the flu is pneumonia. This is a serious complication for the young, elderly, or those that are immune compromised.  If you notice the return of a fever after not having one for two or more days, and shortness of breath, this is a sign of pneumonia.

Here is a great flu vs cold chart!

How can you prevent cold and flu virus in your home?

#1 WASH THOSE PAWS!!  I MEAN HANDS!!!  WASH! WASH! WASH!  SOAP AND WATER!!!!
Proper hand washing lasts for at least 20 seconds, sing the A,B,C’s or Happy Birthday.  Make it FUN!  There are so many inexpensive soaps that make hand washing something kids love to do!!

#2  Teach your children to cover their mouths when they sneeze or cough!
Sneeze into your sleeve!  or Tissues!!

#3  Please, don’t smoke around your children (or pets) Its just not nice.

#4  Follow up and after care!
After they feel better, remember to wash all clothing and sheets in hot water, sanitize all surfaces, and if possible air out the room.
Don’t forget to clean door knobs, toilet bowl handles and REMOTE CONTROLS!!

I hope this post was helpful!  Please share your tips in the comment section.  Sharing is caring, except in the case of cold and flu germs!  Keep those to yourself!  😉

So what do we do when we have a sick day?  well take photos of course!

Banana Bread.

So a few weeks ago my human mom came across a meme that she thought was so very true, at least here in Florida.
She waits for the bananas to turn yellow and then she turns around five seconds later and they are brown and squishy!!

MEME-2014-Banana-Aging-Timeline

Well  a comment on the photo that suggested making them into banana bread!  What an amazing idea!  Only, she don’t bake. folks.  She can cook, She’s an excellent cook, I think, well she has not killed anyone yet so…… but as far as baking that requires measuring stuff out and being fairly accurate when doing so, meh I don’t think she’s ever gotten into all of that.

So by googling easy banana bread, it brought her to this recipe.  http://allrecipes.com/recipe/the-best-banana-bread/  seems easy enough!  oh and she has all the ingredients…. except for dang baking soda.  She has baking powder?  oh not the same thing?  crap ok.  Off to the store she went, mission in her head to use these bananas and not waste them.  Yes, I realize she probably spent more in gas to get to the store and back compared to the two bad bananas she was trying to save, but so what, she had a redbox to return anyways (which she forgot!!!!! ugh) . Off to the Hell also known as walmart!!

The ingredients don’t look so scary!  She can do this!!!

OCT13-2750

Here is the teaspoon of baking soda she made an extra trip to Hell-Mart for.  le sigh, I guess people have done more drastic things for a bit of white powder?  ;)~

OCT13-2762

All mixed up!!!  I promise I didn’t get any doggie hairs in there, no biggie.

OCT13-2764

….and 350 degrees and one hour later….

OCT13-2765 OCT13-2767

The bread is the bee’s knees!  To hear her screaming, “It’s edible!  I can eat this!!  It is sooooo YUMMY!  I’m so glad I stumbled across that meme on facebook.  This will be one for the recipe folder that is fo’ sure!” Really made me smile in the bestest doggy way.
Remember folks, She’s not a baker so the fact that this is edible in any way shape or form, and not hard as a hockey puck and sitting her  tummy and not in my doggie bowl is super amazing!!  She’s on a high right now, the good kind, not the illegal kind (refer to other white powder for that…..)

OCT13-2770

Look at that yummyness!  And the squishy raspberries added in on a whim really do enhance the flavor!  She can’t wait for the bananas to turn brown now!

OCT13-2773

Add a cup of O.J. and some butter and this made her one amazing lunch!!!!  whoot whoot!
